* COMMODITIES: Prices of essential food items are likely to rise further because the nationwide strike called by All India Motor Transport Congress has started showing impact on movement of goods, which is affecting trade in many pockets of the country.

* CORPORATE: Tata Sons has approved a 101.61-bln-rupee investment plan that focuses on the
conglomerate's finance, insurance, defence, realty, and retail units--all areas that chairman N. Chandrasekaran is aggressively betting on.

* INFRASTRUCTURE: The government approved construction of 267,546 affordable houses for urban poor with central assistance of 39.19 bln rupees under the 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban)' housing scheme.

* POWER: The government has received bids from seven power plants to supply 1,900 MW electricity under power purchase agreements to state distribution companies, Power Minister R.K. Singh informed the Rajya Sabha.

* REGULATORY: The Securities and Exchange Board of India has proposed to simplify the process for reclassifying promoters of listed companies as public shareholders in line with recommendations of the Uday Kotak-led corporate governance committee.

* TELECOMMUNICATION: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, which issued its recommendations on privacy, security, and ownership of data in the telecom sector on Jul 16, has called for setting up an electronic consent-based mechanism for telecom users to allow use of their data.
