Mid- Session: Sensex surges over 100 pts; ICICI Bank, L&T up

The domestic bourses extended day’s gain in afternoon session of day’s trade, led by gains in index heavyweights such as ICICI Bank, Hindalco, Sesa Sterlite, Tech Mahindra and L&T. The broader market, however, outperformed benchmarked indices as both Midcap and Smlcap gained between 0.7 to 1.3 per cent. On the global front, most of Asian peers Asian were trading mixed as investors took new bets that U.S. monetary policy will stay loose for some time. On the corporate front, Maruti Suzuki India hit 52-week high at Rs 2,532, up 3.84 percent intraday after India's largest car maker reported strong sales data in the month of June.
At 12:35 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 25537 up by 123.22 points or by 0.48 per cent and the NSE Nifty was at 7635.15 up by 23.8 points or by 0.31 per cent.
In a similar fashion, the broader market continued to hold its ground and was moving above baseline. The BSE MIDCAP was at 9444.33 up by 65.38 points or by 0.7 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 10334.04 up by 130.85 points or by 1.28 per cent.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2974, shares advanced were 1847 while 1021 shares declined and 106 were unchanged..
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 174.40,+6.28%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 2548.15,+4.50%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 448.00,+3.91%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1192.75,+3.91%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 542.35,+2.66%), among others.
On the flip side, Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 538.25,-1.23%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2396.20,-0.96%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 3216.80,-0.91%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 682.00,-0.62%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 816.50,-0.59%), were among notable losers on BSE.
Among the thirteen sectoral indices on BSE, metal index was leading the gain and was trading higher at 13431.61 up by 331.66 points or by 2.53 per cent. Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 174.40,+6.28%), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 98.80,+4.22%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 1279.30,+3.37%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 541.80,+2.56%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 299.50,+2.53%), were among the notable gainers on BSE.
Following the metal index, BSE Auto index was at 15627.56 up by 378.27 points or by 2.48 per cent. Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd. (Rs. 345.00,+6.40%), Bharat Forge Ltd. (Rs. 659.20,+5.35%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 2544.65,+4.36%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1186.00,+3.32%), Apollo Tyres Ltd. (Rs. 203.60,+2.31%), were among the others supporting the market.
