Markets under pressure ahead of GST bill debate

The key domestic benchmark indices continued to hover in red during the late noon trading session as investors remained cautious ahead of the much awaited debate on the GST bill in Rajya Sabha today.

At 14:17 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 27789.69 down by 192.02 points or by 0.69 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 8572.5 down by 50.4 points or by 0.58 per cent.

With the much-awaited goods and service tax (GST) bill entering final lap today, the Parliament will discuss constitutional amendments that are necessary to facilitate the landmark GST. At 2 pm, Rajya Sabha has started a much-awaited debate on GST before voting on a bill that amends the constitution to implement a single national tax to replace the existing tax system.

Among the sectors, FMCG and consumer goods indices were on the sellers’ radar, declining 1.83 per cent and 1.19 per cent respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2831 , shares advanced were 966 while 1728 shares declined and 137 were unchanged. On the global front, Asian peers ended the day on a mixed note, while European counters were hovering in red.
