Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty edge lower in lackluster trade; FMCG, auto stocks skid 19/10/2016 12:33

The Indian equities continued to witness lackluster trade in late morning deal on Wednesday as traders resorted to profit booking, especially in FMCG and auto stocks, undermining firm cues from Asian peers.

At 12:25 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 28017.45, down by 33.43 points or by 0.12 per cent, and then NSE Nifty was at 8669.85, down by 8.05 points or by 0.09 per cent.

In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 28131.07 and intraday low of 27968.08, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8698.75 and intraday low of 8656.8.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were ITC Ltd. (Rs. 241.20,-1.87%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 265.65,-1.76%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1317.50,-1.08%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3379.35,-0.91%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 548.50,-0.91%), among others.

Meanwhile, Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 493.15,+2.45%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1507.00,+1.70%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 755.80,+1.59%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 436.20,+1.57%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 270.65,+1.48%), were among top gainers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, FMCG and auto stocks were leading the decline, falling as much as 0.6 per cent and 0.53 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2799, shares advanced were 1624 while 984 shares declined and 191 were unchanged.
