The key domestic benchmark indices continued their gaining streak for the second straight session on Tuesday, helped by gains in auto and oil&gas stocks, tracking a bullish trend across Asia markets as opinion polls showed that Hillary Clinton was ahead of Donald Trump as the US Presidential election day dawned.
The 30-share benchmark index closed at 27591.14, up by 132.15 points or by 0.48 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8543.55, up by 46.5 points or by 0.55 per cent.
Funds and retail investors increased their bet on Indian stocks amid improving prospects for a win by Hillary Clinton as opinion polls showed that Democrat candidate was ahead of Donald Trump by three percentage points.
During the day’s trade, the Sensex touched an intraday high of 27646.84 and intraday low of 27406.76, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8559.4 and intraday low of 8480.1.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 540.20,+6.49%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 439.25,+3.04%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1056.50,+1.82%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 177.00,+1.67%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 283.20,+1.60%), among others.
Meanwhile, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 635.25,-3.35%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 536.25,-1.74%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 5661.95,-1.03%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 290.90,-0.94%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 154.10,-0.71%), were among top losers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, auto and oil&gas stocks were among top gainers on BSE, rising as much as 1.67 per cent and 1 per cent respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3169, shares advanced were 1435 while 1593 shares declined and 141 were unchanged.
