Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a gap down opening on Wednesday as investors react to the government’s surprise move of withdrawing currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 as it seeks to crackdown on black money. The move, effective from Tuesday midnight, viewed as a positive one for the longer-term, but could adversely affect short-term consumption in Asia’s third biggest economy, making Dalal Street traders wary. Losses in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for November delivery which were trading at 8,502, down by 56 points or 0.66 per cent at 01:56 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may open lower today. With early results showing Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton locked in a tight race in the US Presidential elections, traders may resort to a cautious approach. The focus will be on the shares of Cipla, Lupin, J&K Bank, Karnataka Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and UCO Bank which will unveil its September quarter earnings today. The 30-share Sensex surged by 132.15 points or by 0.48 per cent to end at 27,591.14 on Tuesday boosted by late buying ahead of the US presidential vote.

US stocks rose on Tuesday as Americans cast their ballots with polls showing Clinton ahead of Trump in the race to become the country’s President. On the economic front, US job openings rose to 5.49 million in September from 5.45 million in August.

Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 4281.93 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 768.42 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 4090.43 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 650.45 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 191.50 Crore and Rs. 117.97 Crore.
