The key domestic benchmark continued to trade in negative terrain in late morning deal on Monday as investor sentiment were spooked by weak index of industrial production (IIP) data and dip in manufacturing growth. The market saw some stock specific movement based on the earnings result. Hindustan Motors hit 52-week high after the company executed an agreement with European auto major Peugeot SA for the sale of the Ambassador brand, including the trademarks, for a consideration of Rs 80 crore. Among others, Idea Cellular fell over 7 per cent in intra-day even after the company reported a net loss of Rs 383.88 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2016, compared to net profit of Rs 659.35 crore in the prior year period.
At 12:30 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was 28248.9, down by 85.35 points or by 0.3 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8763.85, down by 29.7 points or by 0.34 per cent.
Bank of Baroda plunged nearly 9 per cent after media reported that the public sector lender’s equity capital shrunk on reinterpretation of RBI rules.
In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 28458.8 and intraday low of 28220.9, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8826.9 and intraday low of 8757.5
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 319.30,-1.68%), State Bank of India (Rs. 271.80,-1.61%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 269.55,-1.28%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 6036.00,-1.22%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 307.60,-1.17%), among others.
On the flip side, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 202.00,+1.08%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2422.00,+1.06%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 472.65,+1.05%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 977.80,+1.01%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 471.80,+0.79%), were among top gainers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, realty and SPU stocks were among top losers, falling as much as 1.64 per cent and 1.33 per cent respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2900, shares advanced were 937 while 1818 shares declined and 145 were unchanged.
