Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty edge higher in lackluster trade; metal, power index up 1%

The Indian equities continued to trade in green in lackluster session on Tuesday, tracking muted cues from Asian peers, as investors remained wary ahead of the fourth quarter earnings report of index heavyweights, such as Bharti Airtel and Hero MotoCorp. Outperforming the benchmark indices, broader markets witnessed firm trading, with Midcap and Smallcap gaining between 0.3 per cent to 0.6 per cent. The market sentiment also got a lift by the landslide victory of pro-European Union candidate Emmanuel Macron in the French polls on Sunday and rebound in crude oil prices from record low. At 12:20 hour, the Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex was trading 29943.58, up by 17.43 points or by 0.06 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9320.65, up by 6.6 points or by 0.07 per cent. In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intra-day high of 30008.35 and intraday low of 29912.24, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9338.95 and intraday low of 9307.7.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 347.40,+1.49%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 437.00,+1.16%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 427.60,+1.03%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 516.35,+1.03%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1344.45,+0.85%), among others. On the flip side, Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3333.00,-1.79%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 345.70,-1.58%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 300.40,-0.96%), State Bank of India (Rs. 296.75,-0.64%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 949.30,-0.62%), were among the top losers on BSE. On the sectoral front, metal and power stocks emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 1.18 per cent and 0.99 per cent, respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2832, shares advanced were 1508 while 1165 shares declined and 159 were unchanged.
