Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty extend gain; broader markets outperform

The Indian benchmark indices extended day’s gain in the late morning deal on Wednesday, tracking mixed cues from Asian peers, as investors resumed buying after logging its biggest single-day loss in nearly eight months in previous session. Outperforming the benchmark indices, the broader markets were trading higher with MIDCAP and SMLCAP indices gaining, 0.68 per cent and 0.97 per cent, respectively. ITC rebounded over 2 per cent after suffering year’s biggest fall of nearly 13 per cent in the previous session after the government increased the cess on cigarettes to compensate manufacturer losses from lower GST rates.
At 12:07 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 31869.39, up by 158.4 points or by 0.5 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9877, up by 49.85 points or by 0.51 per cent.
In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched intraday high of 31895.67 and intraday low of 31793.72, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9882.75 and intraday low of 9851.65.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 420.00,+2.88%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 290.75,+2.16%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 218.55,+1.46%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 251.90,+1.39%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2753.05,+1.38%), among others.
On the flip side, Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 971.15,-1.45%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3768.00,-0.46%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2812.50,-0.41%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1646.70,-0.39%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 161.20,-0.34%), were among top losers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, realty and healthcare stocks emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 1.75 per cent and 1.49 per cent respectively.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2634, shares advanced were 1662 while 834 shares declined and 138 were unchanged.
