Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty edge higher in choppy trade; metal, oil&gas stocks shine 17/11/2016 12:30

Amidst choppy trade, the Indian benchmarks edged higher with modest gain in late morning deal on Thursday, led by gain across metal and oil&gas stocks, as bearish trade in last few trading session paved way for a good bargain buying opportunity, at existing levels. However, caution prevailed in market as investors seek a clearer picture of the impact of the government’s demonetisation move.
At 12:15 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 26348.38, up by 49.69 points or by 0.19 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8134.8, up by 23.2 points or by 0.29 per cent.
In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched an intraday high of 26449.87 and intraday low of 26249.3, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8151.25 and intraday low of 8091.65.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 471.95,+3.07%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 479.70,+1.62%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 435.00,+1.52%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 677.50,+1.43%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 546.25,+1.41%), among others.
On the flip side Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 184.40,-1.89%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2565.00,-1.76%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 436.80,-1.64%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2870.65,-1.50%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2160.00,-1.38%), were among top losers on the BSE.
On the sectoral front, metal and oil&gas stocks emerged as top gainers, adding as much as 1.24 per cent and 0.98 per cent respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2575, shares advanced were 1115 while 1328 shares declined and 132 were unchanged.
