Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a gap up opening on Thursday as the recent bloodbath at Dalal Street amid the shock of Donald Trump’s win in the US Presidential elections and the government’s stunning demonetisation move, paves way for a good bargain buying opportunity, at existing levels. Gains in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for November delivery which were trading at 8,123.5, up by 21.5 points or 0.26 per cent at 10:34 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may open higher today. Shares of Petronet LNG and Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals Corporation will be in focus as these companies reveal their September quarter earnings. Rising speculation of another RBI interest rate cut this fiscal probably of 25 basis points amid softening inflation may support sentiment at the domestic bourses. A drop in consumer inflation to a 14-month low in October to 4.2 per cent has given the central bank room for additional monetary easing. However, continued uncertainty surrounding the impact of the government’s decision to demonetise higher value currency notes on Asia’s third biggest economy, may curb gains at the country’s stock markets. The 30—share BSE SENSEX closed at 26,298.69, down by 5.94 points or by 0.02 per cent on Wednesday amid caution among investors as they seek a clearer picture of the impact of the government’s demonetisation move.

Asian stocks were trading mostly lower as caution ruled sentiment ahead of US consumer inflation data and Fed Chair Janet Yellen’s testimony to the Congress, which may offer more cues over the likelihood of a December interest rate hike. Shanghai Composite fell, Hang Seng rose modestly while Nikkei 225 was tad lower even as the yen weakened. Most US stocks fell on Wednesday as traders assessed the potential implications of the new US President Donald Trump’s policy outlook with his plans of more fiscal stimulus likely to push the case for monetary tightening. US factory output rose for the second straight month, up 0.2 per cent in October from September.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 312410 with a total turnover of Rs. 20691.63 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 604099 with a total turnover of Rs. 39827.95 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 4937951 with a total turnover of Rs. 335514.56 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 448172 with a total turnover of Rs. 31179.98 Crore.

The FIIs on 16/11/2016 stood as net seller in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 9013.48 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 1212.21 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 11339.18 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 3502.83 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -2325.70 Crore and Rs. -2290.62 Crore.
